SOUTH AFRICA'S ruling African National Congress (ANC) party started its crucial national conference today, amid scandal and bitter divisions.
The five-day event in Johannesburg is due to elect the party’s leadership and adopt key policies for governing the country in the coming days.
President Cyril Ramaphosa is seeking re-election, but he has been facing calls to step down over a damning parliamentary report that said he may have broken anti-corruption laws by hiding undeclared dollars in cash at his Phala Phala farm.
Parliament voted this week against moves to start impeachment proceedings against him over the scandal, but some ANC lawmakers voted in favour of it.
Former health minister Zweli Mkhize, who was forced to resign from the cabinet last year over corruption allegations relating to Covid-19 procurement contracts, is expected to make a bid for the leadership.
Other leaders may be nominated for the position at the conference, including Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, who lost to Ramaphosa in the leadership race at the previous national conference in 2017.
