‘Worrying’ fall in graduate employment

TRADE unionists attacked the government’s economic programme yesterday as a new fall in graduate employment was branded “very worrying.”

The number of people employed after finishing a university degree has fallen by over 1 per cent in the last 12 months to its lowest rate for two years.

Commenting on the statistics from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady criticised the Tories’ management of the British job market.

She said: “A fall in the graduate employment rate is very worrying, especially over a year when the employment rate for the whole economy saw a substantial rise.

“This is more evidence that the UK economy is shifting towards low-skill, low-productivity work. Without a new approach, the investment and innovation that modern economies need will all take place abroad.

“We need a new plan that gives everyone — not just those at the top — a fair share in the recovery and creates decent jobs for us all.”
