Corney to sell Oldham after Evans bid fails

Oldham owner Simon Corney was preparing to sell the club yesterday in the wake of his failed attempt to sign convicted rapist Ched Evans.

After spending 12 years at the helm of the League One club, Corney insists “enough is enough” and he is looking for a buyer.

Oldham were very close to signing the former Sheffield United striker, who was released from prison in October halfway through a five-year sentence for raping a 19-year-old woman in 2011, but the Latics pulled the plug on the deal after a storm of opposition, including pressure from sponsors and reported death threats towards Oldham staff members.

Corney still believes it was right to try to sign Evans but following the criticism his overall enthusiasm for the task at Boundary Park has waned.

He is looking for a buyer and hopes the redevelopment of the north stand will help attract one.

“I’ve had enough and it’s no secret,” Corney told the Oldham Chronicle. “Where does it all end, in 15 or 20 years time?

“I’ve been here for 12 years and I just don’t have the same interest any more. I love the club and love the game but enough is enough.”

And on the Evans deal he said: “I still think the right thing would have been to take him, I really do.

“But in the end it wasn’t to be. We underestimated the attention and fury.”
