Morning Star’s heroes of rain

by Calvin Tucker

TORRENTIAL rain precipitated a flurry of no-shows, but the remaining hard riders of Team Star marked the 85th birthday of the paper by battling through Sunday’s flooded roads to successfully complete the 85km challenge.

Conditions worsened soon after the depleted peloton set off from Enfield Town in north London and the event commissaire took the decision to divert the ride onto safer roads.

The overall distance remained the same, but instead of heading out towards the legendary rock music venue of Knebworth, the riders completed two loops of the local time trial course near the picturesque Hertfordshire village of Brickendon.

“At no time did we ever consider abandoning the ride,” said Star circulation manager Bernadette Keaveney. “It was the wettest I have ever been, but our team orders were to keep moving to avoid the danger of freezing up.”

“Last year, the paper dubbed the London-to-Paris cyclists the Heroes of Pain. This year we are proud to be known as the Heroes of Rain!” said the sodden manager, before urging readers sponsor the ride.
