Incirlik air base use not agreed

Turkey: There is no new agreement between Washington and Ankara on using Turkish air bases for attacks against Isis militants, a Turkish official said yesterday.

US defence officials claimed on Sunday that Turkey would allow coalition forces to use Incirlik air base to launch attacks on their erstwhile allies in Syria.

But the Turkish official said the two sides were still wrangling yesterday over use of the base and Turkish demands for a no-fly zone and safe haven for refugees.

Ban hits out at settlement building

Israel: UN secretary-general Ban Ki Moon blasted Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday for continued settlement construction in the occupied Palestinian territories.

During a visit to Israel, Mr Moon said recently announced building plans were “in clear violation of international law.”

Gubarev’s car shot at by gunmen

Ukraine: A leading member of the south-east opposition to Kiev’s fascist-backed rule was unconscious in hospital yesterday after gunmen fired at his car.

Pavel Gubarev is a governor of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic.

His wife told Russian news agency Tass that he didn’t have any bullet wounds and his injuries were picked up when the car hit a pillar. His fellow passengers were unscathed.

Workers strike for hazard pay

Liberia: Health workers went on strike yesterday, demanding hazard pay after 95 of their colleagues died treating Ebola patients.

Union chairman Joseph Tamba said: “Health workers across the country have downed tools as we asked them to do.”

He said that many nurses were not even being paid their regular wage to combat the epidemic.
