Head teachers’ union NAHT affiliation welcomed by TUC

A HEAD teachers’ union became the 54th trade union to affiliate to the TUC yesterday.

The National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT), boasting 28,500 members, is the biggest union to join the TUC for some time.

NAHT general secretary Russell Hobby said: “We are delighted to be joining the TUC family. Over the long term the best interests of students, teachers and school leaders are inextricably linked. There is a great deal we can do together to create great places to learn and great places to work.”

The union has members in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and represents head teachers, deputies, bursars and school business managers.

The membership covers leaders in 85 per cent of primary, 40 per cent of secondary and virtually all special schools.

TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady said: “Education matters — to pupils, to parents, to communities and to the British economy, which is why it is so good to see the NAHT joining the TUC’s family of education unions.”
