UNIONS in Yorkshire and the Humber have thrown their weight behind a campaign of opposition to the government’s inhuman treatment of refugees.
They also backed a nationwide campaign for “safe passage visas” to enable refugees to come to the UK legally and safely.
The proposal came from civil servants’ union PCS, which is working with campaign group Care4Calais to prevent yet more deaths of refugees attempting to cross the English Channel in small boats.
The union’s members include workers with the government’s Border Force.
PCS delegate Linda Hughes said that the visas would mean refugees no longer risking their lives with people smugglers.
PCS and Care4Calais have mounted legal challenges against the government’s controversial plan to deport refugees to Rwanda.
Ms Hughes said the safe passage plan would reform refugee detention centres and give refugees help instead of punishment, and release investment to enable asylum claims to be dealt with “free from political pressure and interference.”
Conference unanimously backed the plan, and proposals for a regional event to build support.
