Inquiry told of frantic bid to stop bin lorry deaths

AN INQUIRY into the runaway bin lorry tragedy that killed six people went ahead yesterday as a refuse worker recounted how he had attempted to rouse the vehicle’s driver.

Matthew Telford told the Glasgow Sheriff Court he had punched driver Harry Clarke, shouting: “You’re killing people.”

He added that he received no response from Mr Clarke, who was slumped over the wheel.

“For a very brief moment I thought he was kidding on,” recalled Mr Telford. “He didn’t respond, so I said: ‘Harry, what are you fucking doing?’

“I started punching him on the back.”

Sheriff John Beckett expressed his condolences to relatives and excused them from court while CCTV footage was shown of the events of December 22 last year.
