Iraq war summit ‘won’t solve ongoing crisis’

A MAJOR international summit being held in London will not resolve the ongoing crisis in Iraq, leading anti-war campaigner Lindsey German warned yesterday.

Representatives from over 20 nations gathered in London to discuss strategies to tackle the threat posed by Islamic State (Isis) militants.

Stop the War convener Lindsey German told the Star: “The truth is they don’t know what to do with Isis. It has grown as a result of the policies of the US and Britain following the invasion and occupation of Iraq and is gaining support as a result of the current bombing.

“The only way things will change is if the government changes its foreign policy.”

Speaking ahead of the event Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond acknowledged that despite the huge sums spent by the US and Britain on Iraq’s security forces, they had fallen into a “state of disarray.”
