Nigel Pearson praised the “mental resilience” of his Leicester City side after they came from a goal down to snatch a late win at a subdued White Hart Lane on Saturday to send them through to the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Leicester were denied what appeared a clear-cut penalty late in the first half after £9 million record-signing Andrej Kramaric was brought down by Spurs goalkeeper Michel Vorm and Pearson added his voice to the calls for video technology to be introduced.
“These sorts of decisions can cost people jobs, especially in the Premier League,” he said.
“There shouldn’t be an issue with finance in terms of having another official that has the capability of replays very quickly. I can’t see why we don’t look to utilise it more.”
However he was keen to emphasise the quality of the Leicester performance, in particular his new signing Kramaric.
“I’m pleased with his contribution today.
“I thought he looked dangerous and made some very intelligent runs.”
Kramaric was only denied a debut goal after nine minutes by a point-blank save by Vorm and he skill fully rounded the keeper on 40 minutes when sent clear by a pinpoint through ball from Danny Drinkwater.
The referee perceived him to have left his leg trailing and Kramaric was unfortunate to receive a yellow card for simulation.
Spurs have been specialists in snatching late wins this season but on this time they were the victims of a late surge by a determined Leicester. With nine changes in their side and their two top goalscorers Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen on the bench, it was never going to be easy for Mauricio Pochettino’s side to create chances.
However, once Andros Townsend confidently dispatched an early penalty, Spurs appeared to be cruising to victory, with Roberto Soldado, Erik Lamela and Paulinho producing some eye-catching link-up play in the final third.
But it was the Foxes who showed the greater resilience, with Jeff Schlupp proving to be a constant threat down the left wing.
His shot fell to Leonardo Ulloa who brought Leicester level on 83 minutes.
And as the game entered stoppage time the Ghanaian left back provided the winner as the otherwise impressive Vorm fumbled his volley over the line.
The late goal gave Pearson the luxury of dwelling on his team’s performance rather than the penalty decision.
“We showed resilience defensively and a lot of know-how but we created chances throughout the game,” he said.
“I’m delighted for the players because they worked exceptionally hard.”
