JAPAN announced yesterday that it had raised new sanctions against Russia to keep in line with other G7 states over Moscow’s role in Ukraine.
The new sanctions include banning some Russian banks from issuing securities in Japan and tightening restrictions on arms exports, said Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga.
This is the third time this year that Japan has issued sanctions against Russia.
However, following a tightening of US and European Union sanctions, the latest announcement looks like a last-minute bid to show Tokyo’s co-operation with the G7 states.
Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida will join his G7 counterparts this week on the sidelines of the UN general assembly.
Japan’s previous sanctions have been more modest than those of the US and the European Union, apparently because of Tokyo’s reluctance to complicate relations with Russia, including economic ties and talks over disputed islands.
