HACKNEY Council was forced to withdraw a controversial order yesterday following mass public outcry that it criminalised homeless people.
Tens of thousands signed a petition against the east London council’s Public Space Protection Order that banned rough sleeping, begging and busking with fines of up to £1,000.
Hackney’s deputy mayor councillor Sophie Linden said: “In the light of ongoing public concern, we have decided to withdraw Hackney’s Public Space Protection Order, while we further review how we can best tackle anti-social behaviour for the benefit of all our residents and further assess the process and impact of the order.”
