South Africa: Anger over corruption at hospital

HEALTH WORKERS in South Africa’s Soweto township will march today in protest at corruption at a local hospital.

National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) members at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital will protest at a takeover by members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party.

The union says that the EFF bullied hospital bosses into hiring 147 of its own members, ignoring thousands of applications from Soweto residents.

Nehawu spokesman Sizwe Pamla said: “The process was so flawed that no interviews were conducted, no screening was done and the employment equity committee was misled with regards to the number of positions available.”

EFF spokesman Ntobeng Ntobeng denied the allegations and accused the union of being “very confused and drunk.”

The party is led by led by former ANC Youth League president Julius Malema — himself accused of corruption.
