Workers at a Marks and Spencer distribution centre are to ballot on strike action amid allegations of racism against staff by managers, their union revealed yesterday.
GMB announced a demonstration to be staged at the depot at Swindon in Wiltshire in south-west England on Friday following the sacking of two workers of Indian origin — one of them a trade union activist — and allegations of racist abuse by bosses.
The centre is run by contractor Wincanton on behalf of Marks and Spencer.
GMB national equality officer Kamaljeet Jandu said: “GMB calls on Marks and Spencer management to take racial abuse seriously and to discipline the supervisor responsible.”
nThe demonstration takes place at the depot at 81 Regent Street, Swindon, from 11am to 12 noon.
