Newsquest launches another job attack

REGIONAL press group Newsquest has launched another attack on journalists’ jobs.

Eight posts are under threat at Newsquest Wiltshire, the publisher of titles including the Swindon Advertiser, the Wiltshire Times and the Gazette and Herald.

The move comes after six Newsquest Wiltshire photographers were made redundant last month.

Jobs have also gone in London, Darlington, Bradford, York, Oxford, Bournemouth and Berkshire.

The National Union of Journalists is campaigning against the continuing cuts and bosses’ failure to invest in regional newspapers, which it says is causing a downward spiral of falling quality, loss of readers and lower circulations.

The union warned that the latest Newsquest plans signalled “another summer of sackings.”
