Mayoral vote a ‘referendum on housing’

SADIQ KHAN vowed yesterday to make next May’s London mayoral election a referendum on the city’s housing crisis, writes Luke James.

The Labour mayoral candidate revealed that he slept in a bunk bed in his parents’ home until he was 24 while saving to buy his own place.

“We had to make big sacrifices, but it was possible. Not anymore,” Mr Khan said.

With home ownership soaring and rent rising, thousands are “forced out of our city, because they can’t afford to put a roof over their heads,” he continued.

Mr Khan also condemned the “shameful sight” of homeless people forced to sleep on the night bus.

And he warned that the Tories’ Housing Bill, which he dubbed the No Home of Your Own Bill, would be a “disaster for London.”

But Mr Khan pledged to “stand up to developers” and insist half of all new homes are affordable.

“We’ll bring in a London living rent. And we’ll build homes for first-time buyers,” he added.
