Durham Miners HQ centenary

EX-MINERS, their families and friends launch a weekend of celebrations today marking the centenary of the opening of the Durham Miners’ union headquarters.

Redhills is home to the Durham Miners’ Association, which organises the Durham Miners’ Gala, Britain’s biggest annual labour and trade union gathering which has lived on despite the Tories closing the last pit in the coalfield in 1994.

Redhills is also the base of Unite Community in Durham, set up for people not in a workplace.

The weekend’s centenary celebrations start at noon with an open day and guided tour of the headquarters, followed tomorrow by a brass band concert and choirs.
