Take a victory stroll down Edgware Road

Our tipster casts his expert eye over the pick of the weekend’s meets

It is of course Derby Day at Epsom and the big race, which is due off at 4.30, has a hugely open look to it.

Golden Horn leads the way in the betting stakes courtesy of a smooth as silk win in the Dante Stakes at York when he had both Jack Hobbs and Elm Park behind him.

However, the problem with the John Gosden-trained market leader is the extra two furlongs on a track which requires a thoroughbred to see out the mile and a half thoroughly.

With Aidan O’Brien having three stout stayers in the race you can be sure they will not be hanging around and the race is sure to take shape in earnest from some way out.

Of that trio I am a huge fan of Kilimanjaro. This beautifully bred three-year-old followed up his Dundalk win with a cracking victory in the Lingfield Derby Trial when he came from a fair way back to see off his rivals.

The bit of rain they had on Friday will certainly have aided his cause and I can see Joseph O’Brien biding his time on his charge before being delivered last of all down the wide outside.

Elm Park would have been a massive player on softer ground, but I now see him as more of a Leger horse and the biggest danger to my selection could come from stablemate Giovanni Canaletto.

He has been slow to come to hand this season, epitomised by his second to Curvy in the Gallinule Stakes, but he has reportedly been working out of his skin in the last 10 days, hence the booking of Ryan Moore for him.

The extra quarter of a mile looks made to measure and there is still some each-way value in his price at around the 7/1 market, Kilimanjaro is still a 20/1 shot!

As far as the supporting races on the card are concerned I think we will see a massive run from Steps in the five furlong “Dash” sprint at 3.45 despite a relatively poor draw from stall five.

The top weight has to drop in behind the pack in any case and merely needs luck in running to play a part.

The likes of Seeking Magic and Barnet Fair should also run their races with anything like a clean passage.

Later on, Highland Castle can follow up his Salisbury win in the 5.15, while the each-way wager in the last is Polski Max at 5.50.

Elsewhere, have a second look at Free Code (5.10 Doncaster), Echo of Lightning (1.40 Musselburgh) and Edgware Road (9.00 Lingfield).
