University staff to walk out over sacking of union reps

SALFORD University staff will strike for four days next week over the sacking of two union reps, their union announced yesterday.

The two UCU union members were suspended, then sacked with no right of appeal, after raising concerns about management plans to restructure the workforce.

The strike will run from Tuesday May 26 to Friday May 29, affecting the university’s school of nursing, midwifery, social work and social sciences.

The action will be followed by a week-long walkout from June 1 to 5 by UCU members working in the school of
marketing and student recruitment.

UCU regional official Martyn Moss said: “Staff at the University of Salford are showing a fierce determination to support their sacked colleagues, whose treatment they found abhorrent and unacceptable in the modern workplace.”
