Foreign Ministry slams US drone strike on militants

PAKISTAN’S Foreign Ministry condemned the US yesterday for its killing by drone of 10 Uzbek and local militants in North Waziristan.

It called the assassinations unnecessary given the Pakistani military’s own massive ground operation in the region.

The military claims to have killed over 1,000 militants since launching the long-awaited operation on June 15, but such claims are difficult to verify independently because of the remoteness and inaccessibility of the region.

Pakistani intelligence officials said that the drone had fired four missiles at a vehicle carrying Uzbek and local militants in the town of Datta Khel, close to the Afghan border.

US drones often target militants in North Waziristan, which is home to local and al-Qaida-linked insurgents who carry out attacks on both sides of the border.

Drone strikes are extremely contentious in Pakistan, where they are widely viewed as a violation of the country’s sovereignty.
