Israelis stopped in their tracks for two minutes today, standing in silence as sirens pierced the air to remember the six million Jews who perished in the nazi Holocaust during World War II.
The country came to a virtual stop as the siren went off yesterday morning, marking Israel’s Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Buses and cars stopped on roads and motorways. Many people stepped out of their vehicles and stood in solemn silence. Pedestrians stopped walking and stood still.
But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used the occasion to score political points, linking the nazi genocide to Iran’s alleged drive to acquire nuclear weapons and its leaders’ repeated verbal attacks on Israel.
“Has the world learned a lesson from the mistakes of the past? he asked.
“Today we are again faced with clear facts and before a real danger. Iran calls for our destruction, it develops nuclear weapons.”
