THE usually soporific European parliament more closely resembled the rough and tumble of Westminster yesterday as Ukip leader Nigel Farage traded insults with fellow MEPs and European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker.
Mr Farage recalled his debut 17 years ago, when fellow MEPs laughed at his plans to take Britain out of the EU.
“You’re not laughing now, are you? I will make one prediction this morning: The United Kingdom will not be the last member state to leave the EU.”
Bavarian Christian Democrat Manfred Weber, leader of the conservative European People’s Party group in Strasbourg, told Mr Farage: “If you had an ounce of decency today, you would apologise to the British people. Shame on you.”
Mr Juncker blew a kiss at Mr Farage before asking: “Why are you here?”
Former Belgian PM Guy Verhofstadt said: “Let’s be positive, we are getting rid of the biggest waste of EU budget: your salary.”
Parliament president Martin Schulz tried to restore order, saying: “You’re acting like Ukip normally acts in the chamber. Please don’t imitate them.”
