Mexico: Migrants lodge abuse complaints against police

ABOUT 200 members of a protest convoy of Central American migrants arrived in Mexico City on Saturday and filed abuse complaints with the National Human Rights Commission.

The agency said that an ombudsman met representatives of the protest, who turned in 139 complaints alleging violations against migrants by Mexican federal police and immigration officers.

The protesters were accompanied by the Reverend Alejandro Solalinde, who runs a shelter for migrants in southern Mexico.

He charged that federal agents had “committed various violations of human rights” against migrants He called for an investigation of events at a road checkpoint in the state of Oaxaca, where he has said that officers had tried to prevent the convoy from heading to Mexico City.

The migrants’ convoy had left Oaxaca later than planned in what has become an annual “Viacrucis” Easter protest.

The migrants carried wooden crosses to highlight their treatment at the hands of criminals and corrupt police.
