Malaysia: Calls for resolution of South China Sea dispute

MALAYSIA called for more efforts to find a peaceful solution in the disputed South China Sea at talks in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

China’s land reclamation work in the sea, a major shipping lane and fishing ground, was discussed at a meeting between Beijing’s representatives and the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Malaysian Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said: “Above all, we must be seen to address these issues peacefully and co-operatively,”

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi defended his country’s island-building activities, pointing out that they were in Chinese territory and that there should be no double standards on the issue — a reference to land reclamation work by other nations.

He urged all parties to support China and the ASEAN members in speeding up negotiations for a code of conduct that governs behaviour in the waterway.

But the Philippines and non-ASEAN member the US are pressing for China to halt construction.
