Union-backed advisory centre opens for victims of austerity

A new union-backed advisory centre was opened yesterday at Birkenhead in Merseyside — in the face of government cutbacks.

The centre, which helps vulnerable people such as unemployed workers and people with disabilities, debt and employment law cases, is leading a major campaign against benefit sanctions.

Last year staff won £747,000 for clients and helped 2,000 people. This year it has already exceeded last year’s total.

Similar centres in north-west England have been forced to close by financial pressures.

Wirral Trades Union Council secretary Alec McFadden said: “The Wirral Centre is imbedded in the community and enjoys the support of Wirral TUC and that is one of the key reasons why the centre has survived and is gradually expanding.”
