PORN magnate Richard Desmond was labelled “Britain’s greediest billionaire” by his own staff yesterday following his decision to slash hundreds of jobs while raking in profits.
Journalists at the Express and Daily Star titles, which Mr Desmond owns alongside Red Hot TV and Television X, have been told 200 editorial posts would go in London, Lancashire and Scotland.
The news comes just months after the media fat cat pocketed a windfall of nearly half a billion pounds for the sale of Channel 5.
A powerful and damning motion passed by the papers’ NUJ chapel slammed the “damaging and flawed principles” behind the proposed redundancies.
It continued: “This chapel does not see why hard-working journalists should subsidise Britain’s greediest billionaire.”
The cutbacks will cover a whopping third of the workforce on Mr Desmond’s nationals. Staff have already suffered a seven-year pay freeze.
Though initially management will ask for volunteers, group editorial director Paul Ashford has threatened to make redundancies compulsory if targets are not met.
NUJ national officer Laura Davison said: “The mice running riot at Express HQ get more crumbs from fat cat Richard Desmond’s table than the journalists do.
“NUJ members want a proprietor who listens to them and shares their ambition for the titles, in all their formats, to thrive.”
The group is said to rely on a large pool of casual staff. Mr Desmond and Mr Ashford came under fire in the early-2000s for union-busting practices after moving production staff hundreds of miles away from the group’s newsrooms and offering less pay for longer hours.
