Aid agency ‘has run out of cash’ for Gaza victims

THE UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) said yesterday that it has run out of money to assist Gaza’s war victims.

The agency reported that it had helped 66,000 families repair homes or rent shelters, but that it has run out of money to help more.

It assists refugees and their descendants from the 1948 and 1967 Mideast wars — a majority of Gaza’s 1.8 million people.

After last year’s 50-day assault on Gaza by the Israeli Defence Force — a war that left over 2,000 Palestinians dead — foreign countries pledged $5.4 billion (£3.5bn) in aid to help rebuild homes, schools and hospitals.

But UNRWA chief Robert Turner said that “virtually none” of the money had ever reached the besieged enclave.

“It’s distressing and unacceptable,” he said.
