Keighley remembers Jones as Wigan close gap on Leeds

JAMES NALTON recaps a difficult weekend for rugby with a minute’s silence held across the country

Hull KR ended a run of three defeats with an impressive 54-6 win against Wakefield on Thursday night, who remain rooted to the bottom of the table, while Widnes beat league leaders Leeds 38-24 at the Halton stadium.

It was a week where the entire rugby league community came together, showing great spirit and support following the tragic death of Keighley Cougars player Danny Jones.

Keighley lined up for their League One match at home to Coventry on Sunday and the day was testament to the memories Jones will leave behind.

The club will retire his number six shirt and a commemorative programme was produced for the game, which sold out long before the game kicked off.

The programme can still be bought online and a JustGiving page has been set up to raise money for the RFL Benevolent Fund in Danny Jones’s memory. Keighley won the match by 52 points to 10, maintaining their 100 per cent record at the top of the table.

A minute’s silence was held at rugby league games taking place at all levels across the country, including the games in round 14 of Super League.

The matches on Friday saw a couple of perfect defensive performances, as both Huddersfield and Wigan prevented their opponents from scoring a single point.

Huddersfield defeated Salford 19-0, with stand-off Danny Brough putting in another clinical performance in the middle of the park.

He controlled the tempo of the game by dictating his own side’s attack and pinning the Red Devils back with some intelligent kicking.

Wigan closed the gap on Leeds to two points with a 28-0 win at home to Castleford. Joe Burgess and Dom Manfredi both scored to remain atop the try scoring charts but the Warriors’ defence is equally impressive, having prevented their opponents from scoring in three of their five consecutive wins.

Elsewhere, there were thrillers in the south of France as Catalans beat St Helens by 38 points to 24 and at Warrington where a last gasp drop-goal from Hull’s Mark Sneyd gave the visitors a 27-26 win.

But the performance of the round came at Widnes as the home side, who were second from bottom going into the game, defeated top of the table Leeds, with a man-of-the-match performance from Vikings captain Kevin Brown.
