ROUND six of Super League XX kicked off with two fixtures which pitted the favourites for the top four against each other.
Thursday’s game saw Warrington travel to St Helens in an attempt to defeat an unbeaten side for the second week running.
Having dented Leeds’s perfect record last Friday, the Wolves had the chance to make a real statement at Langtree Park, but ultimately came up short.
It was a tough but entertaining game, reflected in the 32-24 scoreline, in which St Helens proved they are the team to beat in the league this season, especially at home.
In the second of these two big games, Leeds returned to winning ways as they defeated Wigan by 26 points to 14 on Friday night.
While the game at Headingley didn’t offer the same type of entertainment witnessed at St Helens the night before, the game offered a different type of rugby league spectacle, and the win keeps the Rhinos just two points behind the leaders.
Two tries from Justin Carney and an impressive display by scrum-half Liam Finn helped Castleford Tigers to a 30-16 win over Salford, as the Red Devils lost their first game in four.
It was an important victory for the Tigers, who picked up their second win of the season, keeping them on the same four-point tally as the rest of the bottom quartet.
In the third Friday night game, Hull FC also kept up with the teams around them in the bottom four with a 33-22 win at home to Catalans Dragons. It’s becoming a familiar feeling for the French side, who are yet to record a win on English soil.
Widnes Vikings held on to take the two points against Hull KR on Sunday, despite making it hard work for themselves towards the end of the game.
Rovers managed to score two tries in the last 20 minutes after being down by 20 points to four, but some scrambling Widnes defence saw the home side cling on to a 20-16 win.
In the final game of the round, Huddersfield Giants racked up 44 points away at Wakefield, with Giants full-back Scott Grix crossing for a hat-trick of tries.
The win puts Huddersfield fourth, but the early table is very congested and there’s still everything to play for in the coming weeks and months.
