Scotland: Left electoral alliance prepares to take on SNP

THE SNP faces a new challenge from the left this week even as it won council by-elections on Thursday.

Scotland’s governing party held three seats on Glasgow City Council and one on South Lanarkshire Council, in addition to winning a seat from the Scottish Greens, in elections held on Thursday.

Three of the by-elections were prompted by the resignation of SNP councillors elected as SNP MPs in the general election and two followed the resignations of an SNP councillor and a Green councillor.

All five saw huge swings toward the SNP, but the turnout was as low as 14.5 per cent in Glasgow’s Anderston/City ward.

But the Scottish Left Project hopes to end the SNP’s progress.

It is undertaking a series of meetings across Scotland to develop policies ahead of its official launch on August 29.

The new electoral alliance between the Scottish Socialist Party and Radical Independence Campaign activists is preparing to contest next year’s Holyrood elections in support of Scottish independence, public ownership and wealth redistribution.
