ANDY MURRAY felt inspired after a commanding Davis Cup semi-final victory over Australian teenager Thanasi Kokkinakis yesterday.
Murray barely broke a sweat, winning 6-3 6-0 6-3 to give Great Britain an early lead in their first semi-final in 34 years.
The Glasgow crowd were in for a treat as the Scot showed no mercy to the 19-year-old and Murray hopes the fans can get behind the rest of the British side.
“It’s fantastic,” he said on court. “A huge match to start off the tie and I’m glad I managed to put on a performance. The crowd was fantastic from the first point to the last, we need the same again for Dan in the next match. He needs all the support.
“I didn’t give (Kokkinakis) many opportunities on my serve, (I) was very aggressive.
“Representing your country is a proud moment, I love it, and I always perform my best when I’m here for my country.
Hopefully I can do the same for the rest of the weekend.”
Kokkinakis, ranked 72 in the world, often trains with Murray on tour but was unable to match his opponent’s level of performance.
Murray looked like the extra few days off he was given after his early exit in the US Open did him wonders, especially in the second set which was over in just 25 minutes.
The start of the third set saw an early break for Murray, who ended the match with a tremendous back-handed cross-court return to give Great Britain something to build on in their series against Australia.
