TORY defector Douglas Carswell faced the wrath of spurned former Conservative colleagues yesterday at Prime Ministers Questions, writes Luke James.
The reassuring grin of Ukip everyman Nigel Farage was replaced with massed ranks of scowling Tories as he took his seat on the opposition benches.
He also risked a dose of Dennis Skinner’s wrath by sitting on the bench usually reserved for left Labour MPs.
Political chameleon Mr Carswell tried to slip in unnoticed by sporting a bright red tie.
Determined to face them down, he bobbed up and down from the first minute in the hope of catching the speakers’s eye.
But David Cameron took first blood by quoting Mr Carswell’s previous assertion that “only the Conservatives could deliver an in/out referendum.”
Banshee-like Tory backbenchers went wild as the PM slotted home the opening goal.
When his chance finally came, Mr Carswell had no colleagues to cheer him and his question was met with cold contempt in the Commons.
Lonely lunch times lie ahead unless Mark Reckless repeats his by-election success.
