Syria: Assad’s forces fight back in Hassakeh

SYRIAN troops retook part of the north-eastern city of Hassakeh from Islamic State (Isis) forces yesterday, days after its capture by the militants.

Regular troops and members of the volunteer National Defence Forces regained control of the Eastern Ghoweiran district.

Isis attacked several government-held southern neighbourhoods of Hassakeh last week. The fighting has continued since then, claiming dozens of lives and displacing 60,000 people.

On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin called on all the region’s countries to unite with Damascus to defeat Isis.

The appeal followed Sunday’s revelation — by WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on Russian TV channel Rossiya 1 — of a 2012 secret agreement between Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey to overthrow the Syrian government with support from the US, Britain and France.

Last week, WikiLeaks published more than 60,000 diplomatic communiques revealing the Saudi role in the Syrian conflict and Riyadh’s support for extremist groups including Isis.
