Amnesty calls for human rights focus in Scottish independence debate

HUMAN rights must win out in Scotland’s independence referendum whatever the result, Amnesty International Scotland has urged.

The charity called on politicians entrenched in the debate yesterday to commit to the protection of human rights in the country, regardless of how its population votes in September.

A spokeswoman said it was vital that human rights issues were not “sidelined.”

That meant a willing agreement to international and regional frameworks and using Scotland’s economic and political influence to advance human rights at home and abroad.

“We do not take a position on the outcome of the independence referendum, but we need to ensure that all politicians involved in the referendum debate commit to protecting human rights,” a statement read.

Labour MP Katy Clark said she was happy to back the campaign, with gains still to be made in recognising the right to housing, employment and other areas.

“We need to continue the fight for human rights to be legally recognised, understood by all and easily enforced,” she added.
