A FRESH strike on Arriva Rail North was announced by rail union RMT yesterday to fight plans for driver-only trains.
The 24-hour strike will take place on Friday April 28, the same day RMT members start a 48-hour walkout on Virgin East Coast.
RMT said the latest strike on Arriva was in response to the company’s failure to offer any concessions in talks last week on the safety dispute involving guards and drivers.
The union is angered that Arriva intends to introduce a minimum of driver-controlled operation on half its new fleet.
RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “The public, who support RMT’s campaign for a guarantee of a guard on their trains, will be appalled that Arriva Rail North have failed to offer any kind of progress whatsoever in the talks and have instead opted to try and bulldoze through their plans regardless.
“It is that flagrant disregard for the safety issues at the heart of the dispute which leaves us with no option but to put on this further day of strike action.”
