SOUTH Yorkshire’s valiant Freedom Riders meet today to plan the next steps in their campaign for free travel.
The Freedom Riders were formed by Barnsley Retirees’ Action Group after South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive axed free transport for pensioners and disabled people.
Since March dozens of protesters have every Monday boarded trains at Barnsley station and others, refusing to pay.
The transport executive partially relented and restored free travel for disabled people, but not for pensioners.
The disabled campaigners decided to fight on alongside the pensioners.
In June two pensioners were roughly arrested by British Transport Police at a rally at Sheffield station and are awaiting trial.
Today the Freedom Riders condemned a so-called “public consultation” carried out by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive and said they have conducted their own. The results will be revealed today when the Freedom Riders meet at Barnsley Town Hall at 11am.
