Expert calls for Gaelic subtitles on BBC Alba

GAELIC TV expert Lisa Storey called yesterday for BBC Alba to have subtitles in the language to help learners.

The writer’s main recommendation in a five-point plan of action on website gaidhlig.tv is that “the policy of burnt-in English subtitles relentlessly promoted by producers MG Alba and BBC Scotland should cease immediately.”

Ms Storey said: “A great deal of the channel’s programming for adults contains English language content — a deliberate policy decision by broadcasters — with no Gaelic subtitling, captioning, dubbing or voice-overs.”

She said English language subtitles are “imposed on the majority of programmes for adults” while Gaelic subtitles are not provided as an option.

A spokesman for production company MG Alba said: “Where English features, there is a deliberate editorial reason for doing so — part of our remit is to raise awareness of Gaelic and introduce non-speakers to the language.”
