Belmarsh rep jailed for press tip-offs

A WHISTLE-BLOWING prison officer who is his sick wife’s carer was jailed yesterday for 20 months after passing information to a Daily Mirror and News of the World reporter.

Prison Officers Association rep Robert Norman, 54, was convicted of committing misconduct in public office while working at HMS Belmarsh.

The court heard that he had been paid £10,000 for giving reporter Stephen Moyes 40 tips between 2006 and 2011.

Mr Norman, of Milton Street, Swanscombe, said he wanted to highlight issues of public interest at the prison.

As a result of his actions, reports of staff cuts at Belmarsh and the case of a chaplain having affairs with inmates reached public ears.

But jailing him, Common Serjeant of London Richard Marks QC said public service was not Mr Norman’s sole motivation.

He cited Mr Norman’s financial interest and “intense dislike” for the governor.

Charges against Mr Moyes were dropped.
