Art school to start restoration

Glasgow: A renowned art school damaged by fire launched a search yesterday for a design team to lead its restoration.

Glasgow School of Art is calling on architect-led, multidisciplinary design teams from around the globe to register their interest in the Mackintosh building project.

The city and the art world were rocked on May 23 when flames engulfed the Grade A-listed building, leading to the loss of about a tenth of the structure and 30 per cent of its contents.

New Banksy mural vandalised

Art: A mural by street artist Banksy has been vandalised just two weeks after it appeared it was revealed yesterday.

The piece, called Art Buff, depicts an older woman staring at an empty plinth while wearing headphones.

But on Sunday evening, a spray-painted penis was added to the plinth of the artwork in Payers Park in Folkestone, Kent. The damage is not expected to be permanent.

Amazon announces 1,000 new jobs

Shopping: Online retailer Amazon yesterday announced plans to expand its British workforce by adding 1,000 full-time jobs over the coming months.

The US-based firm said the jobs will be created across its eight British customer fulfilment service centres.

Amazon, which last week became the latest multinational to be investigated by the European Commission over its tax affairs, said it has invested over £1 billion in its British operations.

Hillsborough dad tells of trauma

Inquest: A father spoke yesterday how he had to identify the bodies of his two teenage daughters killed in the “chaos” and “mayhem” of the Hillsborough disaster.

Trevor Hicks was on the Leppings Lane terrace when he realised fans were being crushed in pens behind the goals where his daughters — Sarah, 19, and Victoria, 15 — were standing.

The Liverpool season ticket holders had travelled from their home in Middlesex, the Hillsborough inquest heard.
