Parking wardens out on strike

PARKING wardens gave their bosses a ticket today as they started a two-day strike over pay and conditions.

Local government union GMB’s members in Wandsworth, South London, walked out this morning in an ongoing dispute for a pay rise of £2.50 an hour.

It was contractor Mouchel’s latest strike after failed negotiations set over 100 parking attendants on the road to industrial action.

But good news came for drivers as GMB officer Kieron Merrett confirmed that “Wandsworth’s yellow lines and restricted parking bays will be left free for all during the strike.

“Wandsworth Council must not hide behind companies like Mouchel.

“The council makes millions out of street parking fines and permits, so it is the council which must take responsibility and ensure its enforcement officers are paid a decent living wage.”

The demand for £10 an hour comes a few weeks after the TUC supported the amount as the new living wage rate.
