Zimbabwean Vice-President Joice Mujuru was accused Sunday of involvement in a plot to assassinate 90-year-old President Robert Mugabe.
State-run newspaper the Sunday Mail also named Didymus Mutasa, a high-ranking official in Mr Mugabe's Zanu-PF party, as having met "potential hitmen" in South Africa and Israel.
The allegations mark a stepping up of a reported purge claimed by some to be linked to Zanu-PF's annual party congress next month.
Recently sacked party spokesman Rugare Gumbo hit back in the Daily News, calling the accusations politically motivated and part of a plan to position Mr Mugabe's wife Grace for the succession.
Mr Mugabe was a leading figure in the struggle to liberate black Zimbabweans from white-minority rule in Rhodesia and has ruled the country since 1980.
