CONSTRUCTION union Ucatt branded as “an expensive farce” yesterday the decision to proceed with the privatisation of all prison and state facility maintenance staff, branding it
Prison maintenance staff were told yesterday that their jobs would definitely be privatised on June 1 2015, Ucatt said.
A previous proposal to consider an in-house bid had been dropped.
“Workers have had their lives put on hold for several years as the Prison Service has pretended there was a chance that work might not be privatised,” said Ucatt national officer for the prison service Shaun Lee.
“The reality was that management and the ministers were always determined to sell workers down the river.”
The four companies bidding for the four regional contracts are Amey, Carillion, Mitie and Sodexo.
An announcement of the winners is expected in the autumn.
