Isle of Wight MP faces calls to quit

Conservative MP Andrew Turner faced calls to stand down from his safe Tory seat on the Isle of Wight yesterday following revelations about his love life.

Members of his local party association accused Mr Turner, who has represented the area since 2001, of becoming a “laughing stock” after his fiancee and partner of 17 years began a relationship with his transport adviser.

The island’s Conservative Association will consider a motion urging him to quit by January 26 so someone else can be picked to contest the seat.

It wrote him a letter this week saying his decision to leave the couple’s home “only serves to emphasise to outsiders that you are in thrall to Carole and are totally dominated by her.”

Mr Turner is under fire following damaging accusations about his expenses and questions about his judgment in the aftermath of his split with partner and assistant Carole Dennett.

By designating his Isle of Wight pad in Newport as a second home, Mr Turner was able to claim £103,000 in allowances.
