British United Biscuits taken over by Turkish firm

GMB welcomes prospect of new investment from Yildiz

BRITISH confectionery conglomerate United Biscuits was taken over yesterday by Turkish firm Yildiz.

The move was welcomed by general union GMB, which represents United Biscuits workers at seven sites in Britain.

It said the takeover would mean new investment in the company.

“GMB is seeking a meeting at the earliest opportunity to understand their plans for our members’ jobs,” said GMB national officer for the food sector Stuart Fegan.

United Biscuits is a leading manufacturer and marketer of biscuits in Britain and the second largest in the Netherlands, France, Belgium and Ireland.

Among its brand names are McVitie’s, Penguin, go ahead!, Jacob’s, Twiglets, Mini Cheddars, BN and Carr’s.

The firm owns and operates 16 manufacturing facilities of which seven are in Britain.
