Welsh NHS staff back further strikes

The autumn of discontent in the NHS is set to continue, as Welsh hospital workers announced an overwhelming vote yesterday for strike action.

Seventy-seven per cent of staff voted for action after Welsh health minister Mark Drakeford brazenly ignored an independent pay review’s suggested 1 per cent pay rise — and offered a “miserly £160” that would not even count towards pensions.

Nurses, occupational therapists, porters, paramedics, medical secretaries, cooks and healthcare assistants are among staff preparing to take action. Ninety per cent voted for action short of strike.

“Health workers have seen their pay drop by as much as 10 per cent since 2010, and yet these same workers subsidise the government every week by working thousands of hours of unpaid overtime,” said Unison.
