Former Arsenal defender Andre Santos was attacked by supporters following Flamengo’s 4-0 defeat to Internacional last week.

It was has been a terrible few weeks for the defender, with the club having released him a few days after the assault despite saying publicly that this was not the case.

Off the record, Flamengo are looking to get rid of the Brazilian as soon as possible, despite Santos only playing 28 games for the club.

“I am absolutely saddened and shaken by what happened,” said Santos.

“It (the aggression) was the work of a minority of supporters but as a professional footballer and a father I never expected to experience a situation like that. 

“I didn’t see the supporters coming and when they started hitting me the only thing I could think of was to try to protect my head.”
