Chelsea 2 Galatasaray 0 (Agg: 3-1): Triumphant Blues fail to convince

by Amar Azam at Stamford Bridge

It's difficult to assess this Chelsea side. Their position at the top of the Premier League suggests that they are there on merit, and we'll perhaps know a little bit more after their Saturday's crucial lunchtime clash against title rivals Arsenal.

However, they have flattered to deceive all season, and you could see them continue to drop league points like they did in the recent defeat by Aston Villa. Arsenal, still not having ruled themselves out of the title race, will be looking to create an upset.

Against a Chelsea team that does not quite have the defensive solidity that one would expect from a Jose Mourinho side, Arsene Wenger's men know anything is possible.

It's a similar story on the European stage. In the Champions League, victory against Roberto Mancini's Galatasaray came relatively easily, but was less than convincing. We've seen that a side can win the competition despite being heavily unfancied. That side, of course, was Chelsea.

The west Londoners were on their way to the quarter final draw as early as the fourth minute when Samuel Eto'o put his side into a commanding position with the opening goal. Defender Gary Cahill sealed a comfortable aggregate win with a strike just before the interval.

In truth, the visitors, with Stamford Bridge hero Didier Drogba in their ranks, struggled all evening. It could have been a different match had Chelsea not come into this encounter with the precious away goal scored by Fernando Torres in the leg in Turkey, in February.

"We are a Champions League club and now we are among the best eight, the best clubs in the world," said manager Mourinho. "The players deserve to be there."

Giants of the European game await Chelsea in Friday's draw, but it's hard to imagine the Blues dealing with the strength of Real Madrid or Bayern Munich. "We wait for the draw. It doesn't matter who," said a bullish Mourinho.

Mancini meanwhile, backed his former club to beat Chelsea to the title ahead of in-form Liverpool.

"I think that Manchester City have a big chance to win the Premier League, probably against Chelsea. I don't know if Liverpool, who are doing very well at this moment, can win it. I think it will be a fight until the end with Chelsea," he said.
