ANALYSTS have warned that former US president Donald Trump remains a powerful force after he was acquitted in his second impeachment trial on Saturday.
Mr Trump celebrated after her was cleared of inciting insurrection over the Capitol Hill riots last month in which his supporters stormed the government buildings in Washington, leaving five people dead.
He accused the Democrats of “political vengeance” and said that the trial had been “yet another phase of the greatest witch hunt in the history of our country.”
The belligerent billionaire indicated that he would not be retiring from the political scene, saying: “Our patriotic and beautiful movement to make America great again has only just begun.
“We have so much work ahead of us, and soon we will emerge with a vision for a bright, radiant and limitless American future.”
Mr Trump has previously hinted at another run for the White House and is thought to be preparing to back candidates to stand against those Republicans that voted to convict him.
Just days after the riot, a Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 70 per cent of Republicans still approved of his job performance with the same number believing he should run for the presidency again.
Republican adviser Alex Conant said that Mr Trump has a huge influence over the Republican Party, placing it in a dilemma.
“The party is facing a real catch 22: it can’t win with Trump but it’s obvious it can’t win without him either,” he said.
