Star critics cherry-pick some of the best on offer in the weeks to come

? LIVERPOOL EXHIBITION

Picasso on Paper at the Walker Art Gallery, William Brown Street

Until October 31

The centrepiece of this free exhibition is Pablo Picasso’s Study for the Temptation of St Anthony (1909), which is on public view for the first time. It depicts the sensual temptation which St Anthony the Great is believed to have faced during his time in the Egyptian desert, an erotic story which fascinated the Spanish artist early in his career and which has been given a typical Picasso twist with the introduction of a harlequin. Also on show is work by Spanish artist Enrique Garran, who was greatly influenced by Picasso’s cubist style.

? PORTMEIRION MUSIC

New Sounds of Venezuela at Festival No 6

September 3 -6

Three of the freshest acts from Venezuelan, all of whom blend traditional folklore, Afro-Venezuelan and Caribbean sounds, funk, hip hop and digital bass, are in this exciting line-up. La Gallera Social Club mine Venezuelan folklore, psychedelia and South American culture while Monsalve y Los Forajidos (“Outlaws”) hail originally from Caracas and draw inspiration from Afro-Venezuelan music. Bituaya (pictured) fuse Caribbean and digital sounds, rural and urban, with hard-hitting lyrics and, so the blurb goes, “if you want to know what happens in Venezuela you should listen to Bituaya.”

? MANCHESTER MUSICAL

Dead Dog in a Suitcase at Home, Tony Wilson Place

September 11-26

This show by the ever-inventive Kneehigh was greatly enjoyed by our theatre critic at its premiere and now it gets a run at Manchester’s newest arts venue. Based on The Beggar’s Opera, John Gay’s classic musical satire, Dead Dog in a Suitcase is full of wit, wonder and weirdness as a cast of actor-musicians shoot, shoot and shimmy their way through this twisted morality tale of our times. Trip hop combines with folk, Renaissance polyphony with psychedelia and ska with grime and dubstep to create a powerful musical mix.

? OXFORD EXHIBITION

Joseph Kline at Modern Art Oxford, Pembroke Street

Until October 18

US artist Josh Kline creates a dystopian environment in his first solo exhibition in Britain. At the centre of Freedom is a major installation in which four towering “police Teletubbies” dressed in riot gear guard an area modelled after Zuccotti Park, the privately owned public space in New York City and site of the Occupy Wall Street protest camp in 2011, while in Hope and Change US President Barack Obama, played by an actor augmented with facial substitution software, delivers a provocative new version of his 2009 inaugural speech. Kline’s aim is to highlight the erosion of privacy and civil rights in the 21st century and the show should be well worth seeking out.
