Isis captures Kurdish villages

SYRIA’S Kurdish Democratic Union Party (KDUP) appealed for outside assistance today after Islamic State (Isis) forces captured several Kurdish villages in a bid to expand the territory under their control.

“We have called for support from Kurds around the world,” said party official Nawaf Khalil.

Isis forces have captured several Kurdish villages and killed dozens of Kurdish peshmerga fighters in the Kobani area this week.

He said that Isis was trying to capture an area near the Turkish border that would link it with its positions in eastern Syria.

The KDUP armed wing, known as People’s Protection Units, is being outgunned by Isis, which has benefited from large amounts of weapons captured from the Iraqi army and brought into Syria.

These include US-made armoured personnel carriers, Humvees and artillery.

The Kurdish party was previously antagonistic to President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, but his acceptance last year of Kurdish autonomy brought them together in opposition to the jihadist rebellion.
